Context: Jared Lee Loughner (the person in the photo), is an American mass murderer who pled guilty to 19 charges of murder and attempted murder in 2011.
He was later diagnosed with Paranoid schizophrenia, “a chronic mental disorder in which a person loses touch with reality."
As we all know, the psychology of mass murderer is extremely complicated. Emotions of some mentally disordered patients, often showed in hidden and micro facial expressions, are hardly quantified by human eyes. Today, many artificial intelligence platforms are designed to quantify human emotions to improve the accuracy of mental disorder diagnosis.
How do the two different emotion recognition AI platforms, M and Microsoft Azure, perform in analyzing this complicate facial expression?
As suggested by the Humintell article, Loughner’s asymmetrical smile in this photo demonstrates a contempt that involves both hatred and genuine enjoyment at the same time.
Microsoft Azure’s evaluation fails to identify the hatred and contempt from the person’s facial expression. Its inaccurate result, 72% Happiness and 27.6% Neutral, would misguide the diagnosis of the patients’ mental states, which is particularly dangerous in actual application.
M, on the other hand, accurately reads all three emotion states, Happiness, Contempt, and Disgust, from the person’s asymmetrical facial expression. M’s algorithm for human emotion recognition is more reliable in detecting hidden micro facial expression. Indeed, emotion recognition AI should be able to accurately monitor human emotions so that patients suffering from mental disorders can receive early help.
